Laura in Botswana

A few questions I get asked all the time...

How long will you be there?

It will be a total of 26 months.  The first 9 weeks were spent in training- but afterward, we are all sent to our permanent sites for the 2 years of service.

What exactly will you be doing?

My official title is a "District AIDS Coordinator Peace Corps Volunteer (DAC PCV)."  I work in a government office that was created specifically to fight HIV/AIDS, and I have a Motswana counterpart that I work with directly.  Our main responsibilities are: dealing with the funding for different AIDS activities, coming up with ideas for those activities, capactiy building within the community, and basically anything else I find that needs to be done!

What made you want to join the Peace Corps?

I absolutely love traveling.  And I believe that when you travel, it's important to learn as much about the culture and help out in any way possible.  Make an impact, but don't forget to give back.  That's what the Peace Corps is all about.  In the past, I've only had short-term trips and it left me wanting more.  This time around I'll be able to completely immerse myself in the lifestyle of Botswana.  I believe learning the language and customs will help me reach the people on a much more personal level.

What language will you speak?

I live in a small town where most people do speak English.  But the official language of Botswana is Setswana.

So is it like one big African safari?

No.  In fact, Botswana is not exactly a "typical Peace Corps assignment." ...whatever that is.  The Batswana/Motswana (the people in Botswana) show their respect by how they dress.  So while at work, I'll dress business casual.  And yes, I can be comfortable in flip-flops and such while not at work, but it's still very imortant to be presentable at all times.

Where exactly will you be?

I live in the town of Lobatse, which is just a little south of the capitol.  It gets extremely cold in the winter, but luckily has milder summers.

Can you come home at all?

Yes.  I can't leave my site for the first 3 months of service. (the first 3 months after training) But after that, I am free to travel wherever I can afford.  I accumulate 2 days of vacation for every month of work. Most volunteers get home at least once, but plane tickets and travel expenses can get REALLY expensive- so it'll all just depend.  I do plan to make at least one trip home to visit.

Can you have visitors?

Absolutely!!  In fact, you guys are all encouraged to come visit!

Let me know if you have any more questions!  Don't be shy...
